TRANSPORTATION TRENDS SHOW DECREASES ACROSS THE NATION
Cumulative travel for 2020 changed by -13.7% (-410.0 billion vehicle miles). The cumulative estimate for the year is 2,583.1 billion vehicle miles of travel. Generally, vehicle miles traveled has increased since 1995, except for minor decreases in 2008-09. Vehicle travel decreased most in the Northeast (-14.7 percent) and least in the South-Gulf (-7.4 percent).
Looking at daily vehicle miles month by month from 2018 to 2020, you can see the dramatic decrease that marked
the beginning of the COVID pandemic in March 2020. April 2020 saw only 3.86 billion miles traveled compared to 6.57 billion miles in April 2019. Since March 2020, the average miles traveled per month has struggled to reach the
amount recorded in January 2018.
