When the Christmas Tree Lights Go Down

How NHRA Drag Racers Spend Their Off-Season

The NHRA season lasts 10 months. This 24-event calendar means that during those 10 months, the drivers and their teams get little time away from the race shop and the race track. For our Don Schumacher Racing (DSR)/Mopar® drivers, the 2018-2019 off-season gave them time to pursue a number of different projects while waiting for the new season to begin.

The Fast Farm Hand

Matt Hagan used the off-season to continue to grow his farming business. He uses the off-season and the time when the farm is not operational to travel to a number of farm shows where he can meet with different agricultural experts and learn more about new innovations and the options that may exist for his farm property. Matt also used his off time to travel to a few motorsports events where he met fans and signed more autographs!

Jack Beckman spent his time away from the track getting to work on his own cars. A true do-it-yourselfer, Beckman took on a lowering project on his Ram pickup truck. The project went off without a hitch. In fact, it went so well, he recorded it. It will soon be featured on social media as a how-to video for people looking to perform the project themselves.

Making a Splash

Leah Pritchett spent her time away from the NHRA out west with her husband, Gary. They were able to find the perfect place in Lake Havasu, Arizona. This allowed them the ideal location for further perfecting their other hobbies: wakeboarding, wake skating and UTV riding! They both have become huge fans of these sports.

Contract Work

Ron Capps used his off-season to finalize a contract extension with his main sponsor. Once this contract was announced, Ron was busy attending a variety of events, including the NAPA Atlantic City Indoor Midget Race in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Wedding Bells

And finally, what did Tommy Johnson Jr. do when the season went cold? He came into the off-season hot and got married! Tommy and his new wife, Amy, tied the knot just after the race season concluded. Once married, they immediately flew to Australia for their honeymoon. It was a great way to conclude a top 3 season for Tommy in 2018!
