When you grow up in a neighborhood full of boys, and muscle cars are the topic of conversation, you’re going learn a few things. You’re going to learn even more when you get your first job at a used car lot at age 14. That’s what Vince Scicchitano did. He and his brother (then age 16) lived and breathed cars from that moment forward. They learned how to build them, how to tune them and how to fix them. And, of course, like a lot of boys that age, how to race them. That street knowledge did more than teach them how to make engines run smoothly, it taught them how to run a business smoothly.
“I always had a love of cars,” said Scicchitano. “So when I was 21 years old, I opened Accurate Auto Repair. 34 years later, we’re still here, much bigger, doing great work and still serving some of the customers we had the first year we opened.”
THE RULES OF SUCCESS
“Our number one rule for business success, is to treat people well,” said Scicchitano. “We take great care of our customers. Not for the sake of profit, but because we like them and it’s the right thing to do. If they get stranded, we pick them up. If they buy a used car, we look at it for them at no charge. I give correct advice, don’t upsell and don’t ring up crazy bills just for the sake of a paycheck. And if they have a vehicle that’s not worth a ton of money, but the customer still needs it run, we don’t sell them on a service worth more than the value of the car, we give them real solutions that will help them keep their car going without tapping into their wallets.”
Community involvement is equally as important to Vince and his brother. They stay active within their community and donate 10% to charitable organizations. The staff at Accurate Auto is treated equally as well. “We pay all of our guys a salary and review our newer guys regularly for raises and compensation,” says Vince. “They have an IRA plan and we keep the work environment very happy. Some of the guys have been with us for 20 years.”
