The Mopar Nation

Heaven is a Place on Earth

Words: Darren Jacobs

“If you build it, they will come.”

Top Dog Bobby Bowyer’s 1973 Dodge Challenger was chosen as the Mopar “Top Eliminator” winner at the Carlisle All-Chrysler Nationals. The “Top Eliminator” program recognizes the most skilled Mopar enthusiasts and their restyled or customized Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge and Jeep® vehicles. The winning vehicles will be on display at the 2009 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas this November.

Mr. “Big” Stuff “Big Daddy” Don Garlits added his Dodge Challenger Drag Pak by Mopar (a.k.a. the Swamp Rat 35, inset photo) to the already impressive Showfield at the Carlisle Fairgrounds.

Survivor Man South Point, Ohio, resident Roy Dennison, a member of the “Mopar Survivors” car club, has good reason to smile. He is the proud owner of a 1969 ½ A12 factory Road Runner with only 9,000 original miles. The Carlisle event featured one of the largest gatherings of A12 factory Road Runners and Super Bees ever assembled.

The King and I Chris Romanishan of Bath, Pa., bought his #43 1978 Plymouth Volare Kit Car when he was 17. The car features an E58 360 Police Interceptor engine, heavy-duty suspension, special wheels and additional unique features. The car is one of only a few hundred produced.

Big Red The Carlisle All-Chrysler Nationals plays host to row upon row of Chrysler Group LLC makes and models, including the Li’l Red Trucks.

Snakes Alive You better believe the Dodge Viper is still going strong! A handful of the 42 Vipers that rumbled into Pennsylvania are shown here arrayed near the Viper Club of America tent.

Red Storm Rising If this guy didn’t win the burnout contest, then we’d sure like to see the burnout of the person that did!

That statement holds true just as much for automobiles as it does for baseball fields, as Mopar® lovers far and wide came together to form their very own “field of dreams” on July 10–12 at the Carlisle All-Chrysler Nationals in Carlisle, Pa. More than 2,200 Mopar-powered machines crowded the Carlisle Showfield, transforming the fairgrounds into an 82-acre testament to the passion that exists among car enthusiasts for Chrysler Group LLC and Mopar.

From classics to muscle cars to modern-day rides like the new Dodge Challenger, the Carlisle Showfield had it all—including a burnout contest that unleashed mammoth, billowing clouds of tire smoke that may still be hovering somewhere over North America. Another event highlight was the presence of “Big Daddy” himself—Mopar racing legend Don Garlits. He was accompanied by his Dodge Challenger Drag Pak by Mopar (or Swamp Rat 35), which “Big” displayed at the event.

Next year’s party is already penciled in—the Mopar Nation will invade Carlisle in 2010 on July 9–11. However, saving the date is probably an unnecessary task for car-crazy Mopar nuts. Like migratory birds, Mopar enthusiasts seem to possess an internal clock that buzzes to life each year in early July, prompting them to shine up their rides and take to the road for the annual drive to the Carlisle All-Chrysler Nationals!
