Constant velocity, or CV, joints allow a rotating |shaft to transmit power through a variable angle at constant rotational speed, without an appreciable increase in friction or play. CV joints are primarily used in front-wheel- and all-wheel-drive vehicles, although they can also be found on some rear-wheel-drive vehicles as well. CV joints also help accommodate the up-and-down motion of the suspension.
The CV axles on today’s cars and trucks are maintenance free, extremely reliable and designed for extended service life. Time and mileage will eventually take their toll, however, and with Americans keeping their vehicles longer, it’s likely that service shops are seeing an increasing need for CV joint replacement. The two main causes of CV joint failure is wear and partial seizure due to a torn or cracked boot.
Wear in the outer joint usually shows up as a vibration at certain speeds, a bit like the vibration caused by an unbalanced wheel. The best way to tell if a CV joint is worn is to drive the vehicle slowly in tight circles, both left and right. Worn joints will make a rhythmic clicking or cracking noise. Wear in the inner joints shows up as a clunk or pop when accelerating or backing off on the throttle.
The other main cause of failure is a cracked or torn boot. CV axles are packed with grease and when a boot is torn or cracked open, the grease is thrown out of the joint. And dirt gets in. The lack of grease and the presence of dirt can lead to overheating, premature wear and partial seizure.
